VICTIMS of the Saturday night Pathfinder luxury bus accident have been identified while the death toll has risen to eight. The Bulawayo-bound coach had 66 passengers on board when it collided with a haulage truck at Lochard area near Shangani along the Bulawayo-Harare highway.
Six people including the truck driver died on the spot while 38 were injured.
National police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi released the names of the victims and explained that the bus driver, Bhekimpilo Masuku, who was said to have died, had actually survived.
He identified the victims as Edwin Matusva, 36, from Mutoko who was the truck driver, Robson Mhembere, 23, from Number 8 Daniel Court in Bulawayo and Chris Kasvosvi, 33, from Number 34 Dunclass Road, Milton Park in Harare.
Brian Moyo, 24, who was a conductor at City Link coaches also died in the accident. Moyo was given a lift in the bus after his bus had a breakdown.
The other victims are Albert Nkomo, 64, who was a passenger in the truck and comes from a village at Lochard near Mbembesi and Samson Shana, 57, of Number 15 Clark Road, Suburbs, in Bulawayo.
"We have received information that the number of people who died is now seven including a white lady who is yet to be identified. We also confirm that the bus driver, Bhekimpilo Masuku, survived and is hospitalised in Bulawayo," Chief Supt Nyathi said.
United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) acting clinical director Professor Enyioma Enwarem said a male victim who was in the Intensive Care Unit passed away yesterday.
He, however, said the six other victims were stable and that Masuku was admitted at a private ward in the hospital.
The eight victims are part of the 12 people, three of them Malawians, who were killed in separate road accidents between Friday and Sunday.
