'Joshua Nkomo belonged to the entire nation' says son

Speaking during the commissioning of the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport in Bulawayo on Sunday, Dr Nkomo's son, Sibangilizwe Nkomo said the Nkomo family is humbled by the honour bestowed to his father.

"We are grateful as a family to this honour to our father. We are today reminded again that our father not only belonged to us but to the entire nation of Zimbabwe," said Sibangilizwe.

He added that it is comforting to know that the people of Zimbabwe and the leadership continue to up-hold the legacy of his father and reviving his memory worldwide as the airport is used by people from different countries.

He said it is everyone's duty to rebuild the nation which needs discipline and unity of purpose.

The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Development, Dr Obert Mpofu urged all Zimbabweans to make good use of the airport, which he described as a 'beautiful facility which befits Umdhala Wethu's stature.'

He added that it is everyone's responsibility to cherish and support the airport which is in honour of our liberation icon.

The Minister of State for Bulawayo Province, Cde Eunice Nomthandazo Moyo thanked President Robert Mugabe for making sure that the projects in honour of Dr Nkomo are a success.

"We are jubilant today in recognition of the work of the late Father Zimbabwe. He was the pillar of our liberation struggle, so we are happy that you [President Mugabe] has cemented the legacy of Dr Nkomo by commissioning these three projects," she said.

As part of the Unity Day celebrations, President Mugabe commissioned the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport, unveiled a statue of Dr Nkomo in Bulawayo's central business district and renamed Bulawayo's Main Street to Joshua Nkomo Airport.
