Scores of school children who were meant to offer entertainment at the Joshua Nkomo statue unveiling in Bulawayo from as early as 8am went without food and were only given mineral water.
Ordinary people started arriving as early as 8am to witness what President Mugabe, who was guest of honour described as a "historic moment".
However, the school children were not given food.
"We were ignored by organisers. The children were not given food but only water. What pains us is that other entertainers were offered food."
"We ended up buying food for the kids" said one school teacher who refused to be named.

Mugabe only arrived around 3pm.
Mineral water was also distributed among top guest that included ministers and police officers who were more than half of the people in attendance
There were also sporadic scuffles for food, caps and t-shirts during the proceedings.
As soon as Mugabe left the statue area, people who were far back rushed to the statue to take photographs.
