Banks overwhelmed by customers

A number of banks in Bulawayo worked until late yesterday as they tried
to clear the overwhelming number of customers who wanted to withdraw
their money ahead of Christmas holidays.
Queues started forming at some banks long before opening time in the morning and winding lines were a common feature at most financial institutions.
By closing time at 3pm, hordes of customers were still waiting to be served.
At POSB, doors were still open at 3.30 pm with customers still coming in droves to get their money.
A security guard at the entrance said the bank had decided to extend the working hours because they wanted to assist their customers.
"Management has decided to close late today as they want to assist as many customers as possible. This is a good move because most customers have come from as far as Filabusi with the intention of withdrawing their money," he said.
At Barclays Bank, the situation was the same as few people who wanted to make last minute rush were outside pleading with the security guard to be allowed into the banking hall.
On Monday, most banks had no power thereby making it difficult for all customers to withdraw their money.
Many customers ended up leaving hoping to come back after the Unity Day holiday.
"I came on Monday hoping to withdraw my money but there was no electricity and this forced me to return home knowing that I would come back after the holiday. Today there is power but the queues are too long, I do not know if we are going to be served before it is dark," said another customer who banks with Zb Bank.
