TEN academically-gifted students at Lobengula High School from disadvantaged families will have their first term tuition fees paid for from proceeds realised from items sold at the recently-closed pedestrian mall stand run by the Joshua Nkomo National Foundation (JNNF) in Bulawayo.

The temporary mall was set up to coincide with the unveiling of the late Vice-President Joshua Nkomo's statue.

A number of local organisations including the JNNF were exhibiting and selling various wares at the mall situated between 8th Avenue and Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Street.

According to Southern Eye, JNNF chief executive officer Jabulani Hadebe said the foundation's stand attracted thousands of visitors who bought Nkomo memorabilia and various products.

"We are using the proceeds that we made from the mall to pay tuition fees for 10 academically gifted students at Lobengula High School who come from poor families.

"We are happy that the mall is making a difference in the lives of these students," Hadebe said in an interview.
Schools open tomorrow.

"We attended a price-giving ceremony last year at Lobengula High School and pledged to pay tuition fees for 10 students this year.

"We want this mall to be permanent and our thinking and wish is that from the proceeds we make, a certain percentage will go towards paying school fees for disadvantaged students or to initiatives aimed at assisting the poor," he added.

The JNNF is engaged in consultations with the Bulawayo City Council and the Local Government ministry to consider making the pedestrian mall a permanent feature.

According to Hadebe, the pedestrian mall proved popular with people from all walks of life visiting different stands within the mall in large numbers. Hadebe said the JNNF stand on its own was attracting over a thousand visitors.
