Man steals gun, kills security guard

A Bulawayo man allegedly stole a gun before murdering a security guard during a robbery.
Herbert Learnmore Chikiwa was not asked to plead when he appeared before the Harare Magistrates' Court on charges of unlawful entry, murder, robbery and attempted robbery.
According to State papers, the incidents took place in September last year.
Allegations against Chikiwa arose after he unlawfully entered Robson Mbudzi's company premises on September 21, 2013.
Mbudzi is employed as an operations manager at Imperial Security in Harare's Eastlea suburb.
It is alleged that Chikiwa and his twoaccomplices, who are still at large, broke into the company premises, stole cash, several valuables and a Llama pistol, containing a magazine with seven rounds.
They also stole two baton sticks, a pair of handcuffs, a bag containing company documents and a leather jacket before fleeing from the scene, the court heard.
During the night, Chikiwa and his accomplices approached Collen Julius, who was on guard, it is alleged.
Julius allegedly went to advise some of the occupants who were at the premises about unusual sounds that were coming from the main house, so that they would assist him to apprehend the intruders.
He managed to get the support of four men, including Innocent Julius.
They armed themselves with empty bottles and proceeded to the main house, where the noise was coming from.
Upon realising that they were being cornered, the other robbers bolted out of the house. Chikiwa remained in the house, where he fired three shots.
He allegedly shot Innocent on the chest and his hand, leading to his death on the spot.
Chikiwa fled from the scene. Three spent cartridges were recovered by police from the scene.
According to State papers, Chikiwa and his group allegedly attacked another Harare man, after threatening to shoot him. They searched him and stole his phones, after assaulting and tying his hands using shoe laces.
The gang's other robbery attempt in November last year was foiled.
Chikiwa was subsequently arrested on December 20 on robbery charges, leading to the recovery of the pistol.
He is represented by Obedience Machuvaire.
