A HOUSE in Entumbane suburb has been turned into a private college with more than 50 pupils reportedly receiving lessons under a lemon tree.
It is reported that the unregistered college started operating in July 2012.
The "college" is offering Ordinary and Advanced Level lessons in Mathematics, Geography, History, isiNdebele/isiZulu and Integrated Science at $10 per subject every month and the same amount for registration.
When our news crew visited the Entumbane house (number 30364) more than 30 pupils were crowded under a tree, while the principal and teacher at the college, Mr Trust Maguta, was conducting a Mathematics lesson.
Pupils who spoke to journalists said they were forced to learn under a tree because their number was increasing on a daily basis.
The provincial education director for Bulawayo province, Mr Dan Moyo, said the school was illegal as long as it was not registered and was operating under illegal conditions that were hazardous to health. He said he would ensure that the premises were located and shut down.
"How can more than 50 people use a single toilet? I doubt that the city council would allow such an activity. That is illegal and the college or school must be shut down," he said.
Mr Moyo said Government was decongesting schools yet Mr Maguta was doing the opposite.
