A Gwanda based cop who was thrilled after buying a new car and drove without a valid driving licence broke down in court after being fined $300 or 60 days in prison.

Memory Machaka of Gwanda pleaded guilty to charges of driving without a license when she appeared before Gwanda magistrate Sheila Nazombe on Saturday.

A further 30 days in prison was wholly  suspended for three years on condition she is not arrested again for driving without a license.

Nazombe said said what aggravated Machaka's case is that she was a police officer who was supposed to enforce the law by arresting culprits of her nature not the other way round.
Machaka wept in court saying she was afraid of the consequences that may follow.

Machaka is likely to face further disciplinary action from the police force.

The court heard that on New Years day at around 5pm Machaka was driving her car when it got involved in an accident.

Traffic cops who attended the scene asked for Machaka's license but she failed to produce it.

The police made her pay a spot fine of $20 for driving without due care and attention.

She told the court she had been rushing her sibling to hospital when the accident occurred.
