A Bulawayo man allegedly crudely hacked off his manhood with a kitchen knife on Sunday.

Fred Nachi (31) of Mpopoma suburb died at Mpilo Central Hospital yesterday where he was admitted after the bizarre incident.

Nachi, who is believed to be a member of the Johane Masowe Apostolic Church, reportedly did not quarrel with anyone before slicing off his member.

A source close to the family said everyone had been sworn to secrecy and the truth behind the horrible self-mutilation might never be known.

"His wife served him breakfast and went out to do the laundry. When she came back she found him wrapped in some blankets in bed.  She spoke to him several times and he did not respond, prompting her to try to wake him up.  She was horrified to find the blankets bloody," said the source.

The source said further investigation revealed that his manhood had been cut off.

"His wife screamed when she made the macabre discovery, attracting neighbours. There was an unbelievable amount of blood on the bed. Fred looked unconscious. He was still gripping the bloody knife in his hands and he had wrapped his severed penis in a plastic bag," the source said.

"You will not get anything from the family as they have agreed that the matter should be kept secret. Family members almost assaulted some reporters who were here in the morning," the source added.

True to the source's statement, family members at Mpilo Hospital threatened to axe anyone who tried to talk to them about the issue, soon after Nachi died at about 1pm.

"If you continue pestering us we shall axe you. Go to those who told you the story in the first place because we do not want to talk to you. You will not get anything even if you go to the police," said one of the male members of the family.
Nachi reportedly died from excessive bleeding.

His neighbours alleged that the family had refused to let him have a blood transfusion because it was against their religious beliefs while others said the family did not have money to buy blood for the transfusion.
