A BULAWAYO man is battling for his life after he was knocked down by a police officer who was driving his personal vehicle, Radio Dialogue reported.
The incident occurred on Saturday noon in Makokoba.
"One car driven by a policeman was speeding and it rammed on to a parked commuter omnibus parked aside the road, another Corrolla which was driven by another policeman knocked the man down as it was avoiding the initial accident," said an eye witness.
Tabitha Nkomo said the six police were visibly drunk and were racing in the two vehicles along Luveve road.
"The accident also destroyed precast walls for two houses along with their gates," said Nkomo.
She said the residents were the ones who called the ambulance to save the "dying man while the police were still milling around the scene.
The Mpofu and Nkomo families whose property was destroyed said the police showed no remorse and roughly ordered them to report to Traffic West for compensation.
"They didn't give us any form of documentation regarding this case and as it stands we are not sure whether we are going to be paid for our lost property," said Sihleli Mpofu.
She said the police only told them to report to Traffic West and give the police a report of what transpired.
The police swiftly removed their vehicle from the scene. Police were not immediately available for comment, deferring all enquiries until tomorrow. Another witness said the accident was caused by speeding.
"More people could have been injured had the accident occurred next to, say the bus stop which is metres away and full of people," said the witness.
