2 Bulawayo schools make in national top A-Level schools list

MPOPOMA and Pumula High schools in Bulawayo are the only two schools in the Matabeleland region that made it into the national top 100 list based on the November 2013 Advanced Level results.
Mpopoma recorded a 99,3 percent pass rate from 131 candidates who wrote the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) November examinations while Pumula recorded a 95,9 percent pass rate from 49 candidates.
The two high schools recorded significant improvements compared to the previous year.
In 2012, Mpopoma scored a 96,8 percent pass rate while Pumula attained 90,7 percent.
Mpopoma has four candidates who scored 20 points, two 18 and one with 17 after they wrote four subjects.
Out of the four who scored 20 points, three were doing sciences while the fourth was doing commercials.
A total of 10 candidates who were doing science subjects scored 15 points while 10 others scored 14. Out of the 10 who scored 14 points, four were doing sciences while six were doing arts subjects.
The school scored a 100 percent pass rates in Chemistry, History, Literature in English, Ndebele, Business Studies and Further Mathematics.
In Mathematics, the school scored 97,3 percent, Physics 97,2 percent, Biology 96, Geography 81,1 and Accounts 88,2.
The school did not record any candidates with zero subjects.
An official at the school commended the pupils for excelling in their examinations and attributed the good pass rate to hard work and commitment by both teachers and pupils.
"The results are impressive and we're ecstatic that our hard work is paying dividends. The teachers here are committed to their work and they deserve to be rewarded. They sacrifice some of their weekends to come to school and make sure that their pupils are well-prepared for the examinations," he said.
The official, however, said the school was facing many challenges, which included lack of funds to buy learning materials and non-payment of school fees by parents.
He said some of the parents had not paid fees since 2009.
At Pumula High, five candidates scored 15 points. Two of the five candidates were doing science subjects while one was doing commercials and the other arts subjects.
One candidates scored 14 points while two scored 13 points and three scored 12.
A total of five candidates got 11 points while seven scored 10 points.
The school had a pass rate of 100 percent in Ndebele, History, Geography, Further Mathematics and Business Studies.
The candidates who sat for Literature in English earned the school a total pass rate of 91,6 percent, 84,6 percent in Divinity and 88,9 percent in Mathematics.
In Physics, the school got 71,4 percent, 66,6 percent in Chemistry, 87,5 percent in Biology and 75 percent in Accounts.
An official at the school commended parents for supporting all school programmes. The school is currently constructing a $300,000 science laboratory wholly funded by parents.
Overall, Bulawayo saw the November 2013 percentage pass rate at all of its 39 high schools fall from 86 percent to 80,35 percent.
