A 28-year-old man has been spared jail for ill-treating his five-month-old son.
Jacob Moyo appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Takunda Mtetwa facing charges of maltreating a child and had the three-month sentence wholly suspended for five years on condition that he does not at that time commit a similar offence.
It is the State's case that on August 20, last year, Moyo followed his wife who had gone to visit her parents in Inyathi. Upon arrival, he found a number of children playing with his infant outside the homestead since the adults had gone to fetch some thatching grass from a nearby village.
Moyo kidnapped the infant and went out with him for a night only to bring the baby back the following morning.
The breastfeeding baby did not have anything to eat over the night.
Moyo's in-laws and wife were not pleased and reported the matter to the police leading to his arrest.
