A five-year-old Bulawayo boy allegedly killed his three-year-old neighbour by striking him on the head with a piece of wire, splattering bits of his brain on the ground.
Police spokesperson for Bulawayo Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo confirmed the incident yesterday.
The boy (name withheld because of age) allegedly hit his playmate on 18 February.
The toddler was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital where he was in a coma until his death on Tuesday.
The children are both from Block 41 in Mpopoma.
Neighbours said the children were playing when the five-year-old grabbed a wire from a mosquito net ring and struck his friend on the back of the head.
"About Five centimetres of the wire penetrated the boy's skull. When his aunt pulled it out, white stuff that looked like brains dripped out," said a neighbour.
Another neighbour said the story sounded suspicious as a child could not have enough strength to pierce someone's skull with a piece of wire and embed it so deeply.
Both families involved declined to speak to the Press.
Insp Moyo said police investigations were underway.
"It is too early to issue a comprehensive statement. At the moment we are treating it like a sudden death. If it is proved that the five-year-old did it, there would be no case as a person under seven years of age is not legally capable of committing a crime," said Insp Moyo.
