Businessman shows torn trousers in court

A Bulawayo businessman who refused to pay $500 in maintenance fees shocked the court when he revealed his torn khaki trousers as a way of proving insolvency.
Pardon Nyika, 48 disputed his wife's claims that he is a businessman who owns shops and earns up to $1 000 per month.
Sinikiwe Nyathi, 42 told the court that Nyika whom she is married to under Chapter 37 for 20 years had abandoned her and their 12-year-old daughter to live with another woman.
"All I want is for my husband to pay $500 so that I can afford paying school fees for our daughter, feed and buy her clothes. He gets $1000 plus per month and him showing off his torn trousers is nothing but a joke. He drives a Ford Ranger and we have a house in South World but he hardly comes home now as he spends time with his new woman," Nyathi said.
Nyika however, said he was not employed and did not own any business neither was he making the kind of money claimed by his wife.
"I don't know what she is talking about because I stay with her in the same house and you can see I am wearing a torn trousers, I don't have money. The money that I can afford to pay is $30 and I believe I will struggle to get it," he said.
Nyathi said all she wanted was for her husband to take responsibility for their daughter.
The court also heard that Nyika once sold the couple's car but disappeared and spent the cash with his new woman in Mutare, leaving Nyathi and the child with no money.
"We had agreed that we would sell our car so we can buy another house but he chose to spend the cash with his woman. He takes care of their son and he is learning at a good private school yet ours is at a government institution," she said.
Magistrate Vimbai Mutukwa ordered Nyika to pay $450 after their pending divorce case is finalised.
