TWO suspected robbers appeared in court on Friday charged with the murder of a vagrant who tried to effect a citizen's arrest on them as they fled the cops.
Lookout Dube, 32, from Mpopoma and Edmore Moyo, 26, from Pumula South allegedly stabbed an elderly man in the early hours of July 13, 2012 at the corner of Lobengula Street and Second Avenue.
Dube and Moyo have denied killing the man, saying the cops wrongfully arrested them.
No details about the man have been found to date.
Prosecutors say Dube and Moyo were at Gijima Nite Club around 2.50AM when Dube stole a cellphone and cash belonging to a Sindiso Mthwalo of Entumbane.
It is said Dube was detected by security guards at the bar who recovered the phone but failed to recover cash amounting to $310.
He left the bar in a haste after stabbing Mthwalo on the hand as he charged at him to recover his money.
Mthwalo was treated and discharged at Mpilo Central Hospital.
Bulawayo High Court judge, Justice Andrew Mutema was told that two cops on patrol spotted Dube and Moyo as they fled.
The cops Constables Armstrong Kafesu and Tafadzva Mbayo, who were on bicycles, gave chase but abandoned it after Dube allegedly stabbed the man.
The court heard that Dube stabbed the unknown man three times on the shoulder and once on the buttocks.
Witnesses say the unknown man emerged from the dark and tried to intercept the two accused. Moyo grabbed him as Dube stabbed him.
The man collapsed and died on the spot prompting the two cops to abandon the chase while the suspects fled towards Makokoba suburb where they were later spotted at a shebeen at Kusile Flats, according to a witness, Bhekimpilo Mpofu.
While witnesses said they spotted Dube and Moyo being chased by police, the accused alleged it was a case of mistaken identity as they never fled from any cops.
Dube and Moyo claim that the two cops lied in their evidence, as they only heard about the names of the accused from the patrons at Gijima Night Club.
Dube alleges that Mbayo even failed to pick him at an identification parade and only did so after being told by other cops that Dube had been arrested for a case that occurred at the night spot.
Jabulani Ngwenya is representing Moyo while Dube is being represented by Nozipho Dube pro deo. Timothy Simbarashe Makoni is representing the State.
