A 27-year-old Bulawayo police officer suspected of murdering his girlfriend and stuffing the lifeless body in a trench has been brought before the courts.
The officer was granted $500 bail.
Magistrate Gladmore Mushove remanded Brighton Chagonda out of custody to April 30 on condition that he resides at his given address until trial day.
Chagonda, who works under the Crime Prevention Unit and resides at ZRP Luveve, is facing allegations of contravening Section 47 of Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.
It is the State's case that in August last year, at around 1pm near Mahlathini Primary School in Cowdray Park suburb, Chagonda had an argument with the late Sithabile Ndlovu after the accused mentioned that his marriage was about to fall apart because of their secret affair.
The misunderstanding turned into a fist fight during which Chagonda assaulted the late Ndlovu several times all over her body with open hands and sticks he had plucked from a nearby tree.
It is alleged that Ndlovu died on the spot from injuries inflicted by Chagonda before he carried her lifeless body and hid it inside a trench and fled from the scene.
Ndlovu's body was discovered at around 6pm by locals and they reported the matter to the police, who took the body to United Bulawayo Hospitals for a post-mortem.
Stated evidence read out by Prosecutor Malvin Nzombe linking the accused indicates that the clothes Chagonda was wearing on the day of the offence were stained with blood and that witnesses mentioned how the two had a habit of fighting every time they met.
He further stated that Chagonda was seen by locals assaulting the now deceased at the same place where her body was discovered and that he was the last person to be seen with Ndlovu.
