The driver of a kombi that overturned and injured 16 passengers last week along old Khami Road in Bulawayo after trying to avoid spikes allegedly thrown in front of his vehicle by traffic police at a roadblock, appeared in court on Wednesday charged on five different offences.
Nqobile Moyo (23) of Entumbane in the city was remanded out of custody on free bail by Western Commonage Magistrate Tancy Dube.
Moyo, who appeared in court with a bandaged arm, is facing charges of reckless driving, operating off-route, driving without a defensive certificate, driving a commuter omnibus while under the age of 25 and driving a public service vehicle without medical endorsement.
It is the state's case that on March 12 2014 along Luveve Road in Bulawayo, Moyo drove a public service vehicle, a Toyota Hiace that plies the Bulawayo/Gwanda route, but diverted it to the Luveve-City Centre route.
On realising there were police officers manning a roadblock at Nguboyenja fly-over, the driver allegedly connived with other commuter omnibus drivers and they diverted to the Khami Road route.
As they approached another police check point along Khami Road, Moyo, who was leading other kombis, allegedly tried to avoid the spikes laid on the road in order to evade the police roadblock.
He lost control and the vehicle overturned landing on its side.
As a result, the driver and 16 passengers who were on board sustained varying injuries.
Four of the passengers sustained serious injuries and were admitted at Mpilo hospital. The case was deferred to April 3 2014.
