A 27-YEAR-OLD man stormed Western Commonage Courts yesterday and pleaded with court officials to employ him as a hangman.
Vumani Sibanda from Old Magwegwe caused a stir when he approached the courts saying he had received a calling to take up the job.
"I have been failing to sleep for the past week because of this calling. I feel it in my spirit that I should be the State's hangman and execute people who bring suffering into our community," he said.
Members of the public crowded around Sibanda to listen to his "strange" demands and one of them asked why he wanted the job to which he replied:
"Imagine the man who sodomised 10 pupils and was sentenced to 29 years in prison. He deserves to die because if he comes out of prison, he is going to commit the same crime."
He went on: "I can kill a person as long as he deserves to die. My heart could be at peace if only I could be granted the job."
Sibanda said he was unemployed and desperately needed the job. he said his parents passed away when he was in Form Two and was forced to quit school.
"I stay with my uncle who is a retired soldier. I am grown up now and need to take care of my family," he said.
Court officials had a torrid time trying to calm him dowm.
"We are also deployed by the State. If you need the job you must apply to government offices in Harare," said one of the officials.
Disappointedly, Sibanda left the court but vowed to pursue his dream.
"You don't want to assist me but I will make sure that I serve the nation and get the job," he said leaving the crowd in stitches.
