A PLUMTREE man allegedly ripped his girlfriend's stomach open with a knife and stabbed her several times after he found her in the company of another man.

Tawanda Nyoni, 26, stabbed Grator Dube, 25, twice on the back and ripped her stomach open leaving the intestines protruding.

Dube was rushed to the United Bulawayo Hospitals where she is battling for her life.

Prosecutors say a misunderstanding between the two love birds started after Dube spotted his girlfriend having a nice time with another man, Khune Ncube, at a local bar.

He followed them at a distance as they left the bar in a car and proceeded to Ncube's house in Mathendele area.

Nyoni confronted the pair as they came out of the car and an argument arose, the court heard.

He produced a knife and Ncube jumped into his car and sped off  leaving Dube at the mercy of her angry boyfriend.

Nyoni stabbed Dube twice on her back and ripped her stomach open, say the prosecutors.

Plumtree magistrate, Livard Philemon remanded Nyoni in custody to March 31 as Dube is still in hospital and a medical report has not been compiled.

Prosecuting, Elisha Mazorodze, said Nyoni saw his girlfriend in the company of another man on March 22 around 7PM.

"The accused is employed at Malalangwe Lodge in Marula area. He came across his girlfriend standing with another man, Khune Ncube, in Mathendele area.

"A misunderstanding arose between them and he stabbed the complainant twice on the back and ripped her stomach open with an Okapi knife," said Mazorodze.

"People from the neighbourhood heard Dube screaming and they found her lying in a pool of blood with some of her intestines protruding. The accused person had fled the scene but he later turned himself in after a report had been made to the police," said Mazorodze.

Nyoni is facing a charge of attempted murder.
