A BULAWAYO self-styled prophet accused of raping a married woman, yesterday admitted proposing love to the victim who was introduced to him by her husband.

Fanuel Mututu (39) of Zvakazarurwa Apostolic Church based in Old Lobengula, allegedly threatened to pray for the death of the woman if she refused to sleep with him.

Mututu appeared at the Bulawayo Regional Court before magistrate Colet Ncube facing a rape charge.

He pleaded not guilty saying the woman framed him because he had refused to pray for the prosperity of her husband's business.

"She lied about me because I refused to pray for her husband who wanted me to pray for his business to flourish," Mututu said.

But he admitted that at some point towards the end of the prayers he had proposed love to the woman, but she turned him down.

"I never threatened her, let alone touch her," Mututu said.

Ncube remanded him in custody to April 11 when a defence witness would be called to testify.

Prosecutor Trust Mudumo told the court that sometime in 2013, the woman's husband who knew Mututu, took her to him for spiritual assistance.

The woman later went to Mututu's house alone and the State alleged that he advised her to conduct prayer and fasting sessions for three days.

On March 26 2013 at around 7am, the woman went to the prophet again for prayers and fasting.

Mututu allegedly took her to a bushy area in the Kelvin industrial site.

Two days later, she again visited him and after praying for her, he allegedly started touching and c*ressing her.

The woman told him to stop, but he continued.

He then allegedly pulled down her skirt and threatened to pray for her death if she resisted.

He is accused of raping the woman once while gagging her mouth before threatening to pray for her death if she told anyone about the matter.

The woman told her husband and a report was made to the police, leading to Mututu's arrest.
