Grade Four (4) students at Coghlan Primary school in Bulawayo are reportedly being taught by a Shona speaking Student Teacher on teaching practice and have hence could not learn properly.
Reports state that at the beginning of January 2014 students informed their parents that a certain teacher was teaching them using Shona which they were not well conversant in and hence could not learn properly.
The teacher is reportedly not even conversant in the Ndebele language. After being informed the parents confronted the Headmaster who said she was new to the school and did not know how to deal with the matter.
However parents where even puzzled as to which criteria was even used to deploy the teacher who could not even teach in the local language. It is sad considering that Coghlan Primary is an A school and should be one of the leading schools in early childhood development.
The issue at hand further exposes the failure by public institutes to uphold and respect the constitutional rights of people in Matabeleland.
It is proving to be more of a habit and strategy to completely alienate their rights than a simple issue of human rights abuses.
