A mentally-challenged man appeared before the courts yesterday for allegedly raping a two-year-old toddler.
Magistrate Gladmore Mushove remanded Dzikamai Moyo ,39, of Makokoba suburb to April 24 in custody for trial.
Moyo told the court that he did not remember raping the minor and was surprised to hear that he had committed such an offence.
The mother of the infant, who cannot be named for ethical reasons, confirmed that the accused person was mentally-challenged but he behaved normally sometimes, hence she suspects that he committed the offence intentionally knowing he would use his condition to cover up the offence.
She further said on the day of the offence, Moyo appeared normal and he did not show any signs of mental instability.
It is alleged that on April 18, the minor was playing alone outside their home when accused called her to his bedroom where he locked the door but forgot to draw curtains on the windows.
Moyo who is a tenant and shares the same house with the minor took advantage of the fact that the mother had gone next door to have a conversation with a friend when he sexually abused her.
The police statement says, Moyo took the infant and placed her on his bed, and raped her before he was interrupted by the toddler's mother who attempted to open the door before she checked through the window.
The mother stated that she had noticed that her baby was missing yet she left her playing in front of the house.
The accused then released the complainant when he noticed he had been caught red-handed, leading to his arrest after a mob of people surrounded the house and called the police.
