Injured armed robbers appear at hospital bedside court

THREE armed robbers who had to flee for their lives when a senior ranger from the Parks and Wildlife Management Authority in Bulawayo disarmed them and thoroughly beat them, appeared in court swathed in bandages.

The extent to which the ranger, Godfrey Munkuli assaulted the trio became apparent when the court session was held by their bedsides in hospital.

The trio Mduduzi Ndlovu (31) of house number 744 Geneva Gwanda, Learnmore  Gona (30) of 13 Basil Road Sauerstown and Thabolwethu Mlauzi (31) of number 55 Habane Umzingwane, appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Takunda Mtetwa at the United Bulawayo Hospital (UBH) facing charges of attempted robbery and illegal possession of a firearm.

The prosecutor, Tafadzwa Mutsambiwa, told the court that on 1 May at around 4pm , the three accused in the company of three other accomplices who are still at large proceeded to Parks and Wildlife Management Authority Offices at corner 15th Avenue and Joshua Nkomo Street in Bulawayo.

They allegedly produced an AK47 rifle and demanded to be led by Munkuli, who was alone at the office on the day, to a stockpile of ivory that they believed was hidden in one of the offices.

Munkuli, turned the tables on the trio when he suddenly bit the accused man who was holding the rifle on the finger, grabbed the gun and beat the tree men until they shouted for help.

Members of the public from the public who intervened, had to catch one of the suspects along 13th Avenue when he bolted out of the office, leaving his two colleagues at the mercy of the uncompromising Munkuli.
By the time they entered the offices, one of the suspects had locked himself in a toilet while another was hiding from Munkuli in an operations office.
The AK47 rifle loaded with nine rounds of ammunition was recovered Munkuli suffered injuries on his mouth and three of his teeth are loose.

The suspects were denied bail and were remanded in custody on their hospital beds to 20 May.
