A Bulawayo female magistrate Wednesday told a 55-year-old woman, who dragged her husband to court after he defaulted paying maintenance, that men need to be gently taken care of like eggs, as they are likely to stray and look for other women.
Shadreck Chipikiri (66) of Entumbane appeared before Magistrate Sibongile Msipa at the Tredgold Courts and pleaded guilty to failing to pay maintenance to his wife Florence since February this year.
He explained that he had moved out of their matrimonial home in Pumula North in 2009 because she was aggressive and violent.
"Your worship this woman is very violent. She is abusive, she talks too much and I am a quiet person. At one point she actually assaulted me, so I decided to move out of the house," Chipikiri told the court.
Msipa asked Florence why she was hostile towards her husband.
"These men need to be looked after like eggs. If you don't, they will run away and look for other women. Look at you now, why are you so violent?" asked the magistrate.
Florence, who wept while her husband was testifying, said the couple's problems began when Shadrek started denying her conjugal rights.
"He started wearing a boxer short when we went to bed. The situation even worsened as he moved on to wear a trouser in bed. I was denied my conjugal rights," she said.
"He later started sleeping out, giving the excuse that he was working late. He eventually stopped coming home. When I went to his shop to enquire the reasons for his behaviour, he said he was going to retaliate by staying away for even longer."
Msipa ordered the man to pay $100 to his wife by June 30 2014, or face 30 days imprisonment.
"You are still married to this woman. You will pay the $50 monthly maintenance for this woman until she re-marries or dies," said the magistrate.
Chipikiri, who is self-employed as a tailor, said he was not able to meet the monthly payment as his business did not generate sufficient income.
