A 17-year-old Nkulumane girl saved her siblings aged one and seven from a raging fire that consumed their house yesterday afternoon.
The three children were lucky to escape unhurt from the fire that destroyed property worth nearly $ 3 000.
Property destroyed includes two beds, a wardrobe, the electricity wiring and clothing, asbestos sheet, window panes and a door.
Tholakele Ncube the eldest of the three juveniles said they were watching television in the sitting room when fire broke out in the one of the bedrooms.
"We smelt burnt rubber and thought it was something on the stove .We were shocked to see smoke coming out of the bedroom door. We managed to rush outside and call neighbours who assisted to put the fire off, "said Ncube.
She said they had to grope their way through thick smoke to safety.
Tholakele reportedly carried the youngest child on her back while holding the other's hand as she guided them outside.
Luckily they made it before smoke- which reportedly overcomes a majority of people burnt in fires- choked them to death.
By the time the fire brigade arrived, neighbours had put out the blaze.
They saved property valued thousands of dollars in so doing and prevented the fire from spreading to other rooms. The fire broke out in the afternoon when the children were alone.
It is suspected the fire was caused by a faulty electric connection.
