HIGHLANDERS Football Club striker Gabriel Nyoni was yesterday questioned by Western Commonage police in Bulawayo after handing himself in following allegations that he raped a woman suspected to be his girlfriend.

According to a source, Nyoni's suspected girlfriend from Mpopoma, reported the Bosso striker to the police accusing him of raping her.

"He reported at West Commonage for questioning on allegations of rape and the police are still working on the case," the source said.

"He was later released without charge as the police are still formulating charges. He is likely to appear in court soon."

Bosso chief executive officer Ndumiso Gumede confirmed to Southern Eye that team manager Willard Mashinkila-Khumalo had informed him police had requested him to bring Nyoni for questioning.

But the Highlanders boss said he was not privy to the case and had not received any feedback.

"I don't know what the case is all about. The manager would be the best person to tell you what happened, but he is gagged by our policies," Gumede said.

"The manager said he was asked to bring him to the police, but I have not received any feedback."

Police could not be reached for comment last night.

Nyoni had just returned to the Bosso first team after a nine-week ankle injury lay-off sustained in Highlanders' second game of the season against Shabanie Mine on April 13 which the Bulawayo giants won 4-1.

He played his first game after returning from injury in a 1-1 draw against FC Platinum on June 8 at Barbourfields Stadium coming in as a second-half substitute.

Nyoni started in the 1-1 stalemate against Triangle at Gibbo Stadium in Chiredzi last Sunday and missed a last-minute chance to seal maximum points for Bosso after slamming his shot into the side netting.
