The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Media, Information and Communication Technology has revealed that the state controlled Herald had a press which can print up to 100 000 copies.

The committee, however, said The Chronicle was facing challenges which resulted in the company incurring a lot of expenses in importing raw materials.

"The newspapers also pay duty for newsprint as well as deliveries as it sources operational items through third parties willing to give credit terms due to cash flow problems. The newspapers also pay duty for newsprint yet newspapers coming into the country are exempted from paying duty," read the report.

On staffing issues at the public media, the committee said workers decried poor working conditions.

At Zimpapers: "Workers at the head office in Harare expressed concern on limited number of vehicles to take reporters to different areas to collect news.

"They complained that salaries were not linked to educational qualifications and experience. As a result, there is no motivation as salaries are uniform across various divisions regardless of their financial performance," the committee said.
