A 29-year-old Bulawayo man accused of raping and infecting his teenage niece with HIV on Friday told the court he tested negative and was not ill.
The 16-year-old' s uncle, who resides in Robert Sinyoka near Pumula Township, pleaded not guilty to rape when he appeared before magistrate Mark Dzira at the Bulawayo Regional Court.
In her testimony in court, the complainant said she was raped by her ailing uncle in his bedroom sometime in November 2010.
Testifying in his defence, the accused disputed the allegations that he infected his niece with the deadly virus.
"I am denying that I am HIV positive. I was not sick in 2010. She is trying to fix her grandmother, who is my sister, by causing my arrest. There is some bad blood between the complainant and her grandmother," he said.
Dzira ordered the defence counsel to produce the HIV test results today (Tuesday).
The state represented by prosecutor Tinashe Dzipe alleges that on an unknown date, but sometime in November 2010 at about 1200hrs, the girl's grandmother left for church while she remained alone with her uncle.
At lunch time, the girl went to her uncle's bedroom to give him some food and afterwards left the room.
After about an hour, he reportedly called her to come and collect the plates.
When she entered the room, he allegedly locked the door and pushed her on to the bed.
He allegedly raped her once.
The state alleges that the teenager informed her aunt about the incident after she fell ill and tested positive.
