The feud between Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister, Cde Walter Mzembi and ZTA Chief Executive, Mr. Karikoga Kaseke over the dethronement of Miss Personality, Lungile Mathe, has been put to rest, with the ZTA Chief making a major climb down.
In a joint media briefing with Cde Mzembi, Mr. Kaseke apologised and expressed regret over the manner in which he conducted himself in his engagement with the media.
"I have expressed my regret and apologies to the Minister over the manner I conducted myself in my engagements with the media in an effort to explain myself and response to media questions.
"I accept and respect the Minister's counsel, authority and responsibility over this matter and over ZTA in general. I will henceforth desist from engaging with the media over this issue," said Mr. Kaseke.
Kaseke said he has left the issue to be handled by the ZTA Board Chairperson working with a select committee appointed by the Minister.
"As the Minister has determined, the issue regarding Miss Mathe will be handled by ZTA Board Chairperson working with a select committee appointed by the Minister," Mr. Kaseke added.
Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister, Cde Walter Mzembi commended Mr. Kaseke for being brave in realising that pulling in different directions opens the sector up to manipulation by the media.
He said ZTA should rather concentrate on its core business while the appointed committee takes up the matter and recommend the best way to close the matter.
"I am pleased that Mr. Karikoga Kaseke, Chief Executive, Zimbabwe Tourism Authority, has realised the folly of us working at cross purposes by opening ourselves up to manipulation by the media.
"I am very satisfied with the stance he has taken. The Ministry and its parastatal will fully focus on the various critical programmes and projects it has to complete in the second half of the year," Cde Mzembi said.
ZTA Deputy Chairperson Mr. Genious Maphosa implored the media to desist from further speculation on the matter until it is finalised.
