SEVEN members of the same family who were killed in a road accident last Friday were buried on Tuesday at their rural homes in Shurugwi. The seven were buried at three different villages under Chief Nhema.

The extended family members died on the spot on their way to Shurugwi to collect a new born baby and the nursing mother.

The accident occurred at about 10.30PM on Friday when the Toyota Granvia collided with a haulage truck at Tree Top Shopping Centre on the outskirts of Gweru.

Those who died were Judgement Cheya, 38, who was driving, his uncle Precious Cheya, 41, sister Tendai Cheya, 25, niece Tsungirirai, 15, daughter Josephine, 13, and Tendai's two children Honest, 5, and Busisiwe Burombo, 11 months.

Fiso Ncube, wife to Precious, told Chronicle that her husband and daughter Tsungirirai were buried together.

"The two were buried at around 12 mid-day in Nyahuna Village in Shurugwi with scores of villagers and school authorities in attendance," said Ncube.

Kwanele Moyo, aunt to Tsungirirai, said she travelled together with the late girl's mother from South Africa after learning of the sudden death.

"We arrived in Bulawayo on Sunday evening, it is really hard to believe Tsungi is gone at such a tender age," said Moyo.

The driver of the vehicle, Judgement and his daughter Josephine were buried at his mother's homestead while his sister Tendai and her two children Honest and Busisiwe Burombo were buried at Burombo homestead.

The driver of the haulage truck, Misheck Mukono, said the driver of the Toyota Granvia swerved to the right and the vehicle veered off the road before swerving back into the road encroaching onto his lane resulting in the collision.
