ZIPRA Ex- combatant Maxwell Mkandla has expressed fear that the race to fill up the vacant vice president post and jostling for the Zanu-PF national chairmanship has the potential to further divide the ruling party and nullify the Unity Accord of 1987.
Mkandla said that the infighting in the ruling party will create an avenue for the international community to further isolate Zimbabwe and make innocent citizens who are already suffering to suffer more.
The remarks come in the wake of revelations that Zanu-PF Secretary for Administration Didymus Mutasa has gone against the grain by declaring interest to take over the national party chairman post despite it being reserved for former-PF Zapu members since the signing of the Unity Accord.
Many names have been touted for the vice president and party's chairman posts since the death of Vice President John Landa Nkomo.
Simon Khaya Moyo, the incumbent National Chairman of Zanu-PF is tipped to take over the VP post though it appears there are mixed feelings and comments over his eligibility amid claims that there are some former-PF Zapu members, senior to him who deserve the post.
Names that have come to the fore include former Zimbabwe Ambassador to South Africa, Phekezela Mphoko, Retired Brigadier General Ambrose Mutinhiri and Home Affairs Minister, Kembo Mohadi.
Mkandla said Zanu-PF must not create chances for enemies of the country to intervene in internal affairs.
"We do not understand why Mutasa wants to create problems for the party by wanting to take the position which he knows belong to-PF-Zapu," he said.
"Zanu-PF must stop creating situations where the international community use force to intervene in our issues like what is happening in Syria, Egypt and Gaza and risk our lives."
Mkandla said Jabulani Sibanda and Sikhanyiso Ndlovu were highly eligible to be Zanu-PF chairman representing-PF Zapu in the unity accord. He also said no one can surpass Khaya Moyo in the eligibility to take the VP post.
Mkandla said the Unity Accord must be respected as it was signed due to the killings of many innocent people in Matabeleland.
"The party must not allow disagreements to derail the VP and Chairman' posts from-PF Zapu members, if it does, then it must brace for deadly fragmentation," he said.
