A 27-YEAR-OLD commuter omnibus driver from Pumula North in Bulawayo who allegedly hit and killed a pedestrian while speeding has been arrested.
Blessed Mathe appeared before magistrate Temba Chimiso yesterday facing a culpable homicide charge. He told the court that he could not avoid his victim, Herbert Nyathi, whose age was not given.
Mathe alleged that Nyathi suddenly attempted to cross the road resulting in the crash. The kombi driver pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded out of custody to August 28.
"I wasn't speeding. In fact, I saw Nyathi from a distance but as I was approaching him he suddenly decided to cross the road. There was no way I could've avoided him," said Mathe.
Prosecuting, Mitchelle Chiboiwa told the court that Mathe was driving at night on an unlit street when he knocked down Nyathi.
"On 26 July at about 10PM along an unnamed and unlit road near Pumula car park, Mathe was driving a Toyota Hiace which is a public service vehicle, due south. He hit Herbert Nyathi who was walking along the same road due north on the right lane," said Mitchelle
Nyathi sustained serious head injuries and was referred to Mpilo Central Hospital for treatment, the court heard.
The prosecutor said Nyathi died on the following day at Mpilo's intensive care unit due to the head and neck injuries.
