A 39-year-old Fort Rixon allegedly buried an infant alive to fix his wife for getting impregnated by another man.
Paralysed with fear and grief, Deliwe Tsikai could only watch helplessly as her jealous husband Andrew Mhodi (39) piled sand on her screaming son.
Mhodi of Village 2 Pioneer Fort Rixon, is said to have forsaken his wife and five children in Chinhoyi and went away for three years without communicating with them.
He returned to find the woman pregnant and reportedly said he did not mind about the development.
Bulawayo High Court Martin Makonese heard how Mhodi shifted goal posts when Tsikai gave birth and said he hated the child with a passion.
Mhodi is facing murder charges.
His wife told the court that Mhodi seemed possessed when he buried the child at a river bank in April last year.
She said he forced her to watch as he dug the grave and buried the child.
Tsikai said he later told her he was teaching her a lesson so that she would not allow herself to be impregnated by another man again.
She added that she fled from Mhodi's home and reported the matter at Murekerera Police Station in Chinhoyi.
The matter was then referred to Fort Rixon Police Station leading to Mhodi's arrest.
In his defence, Mhodi through his lawyer, Hlabezulu Malinga denied the charge.
He said Tsikai had given birth to a dead child and the two of them agreed to bury it
The trial continues today.
