MDC Senator kills pedestrian

THE Senator for Lupane, Dalumuzi Khumalo, allegedly ran over a pedestrian with his vehicle leading to his death on Monday evening.

Matabeleland North police spokesperson Inspector Trust Ndlovu confirmed the accident, which occurred at about 7pm at the 124km peg near Phulula shops along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road. Insp Ndlovu said Sen Khumalo (47), of Village 25 Resettlement area under Chief Mabhikwa in Lupane who was driving a Nissan vehicle hit Johane Mpala (64), of Daika Village in the same district while he was crossing the road.

"We received a report about a Nissan truck owned and driven by Dalumuzi (Khumalo). He was driving along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road towards Bulawayo and when he approached the 124 km peg, Mpala was crossing the road in front of the vehicle," said Insp Ndlovu.

"As a result he was knocked down and sustained serious head injuries. He died on the spot."

Insp Ndlovu said the matter was reported at Lupane Police Station while Mpala's body was taken to St Luke's Hospital. Sen Khumalo belongs to the MDC led by Professor Welshman Ncube. His vehicle is being held at Lupane Police Station pending finalisation of investigations.

""Investigations on what transpired are continuing and the vehicle is held by the police until such a time when it would be re-tested by the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) before it is allowed back on the road," said Insp Ndlovu.
