RANGERS on Sunday stunned Cowdray Park residents when they grabbed stray donkeys and loaded them into a truck before firing into the air to disperse the mob.

The rangers, who were using a Bulawayo City Council truck and were heavily armed with rifles, wasted no time looking for the owners of the beasts and just drove them into a truck and left the suburb.

After taking the beasts, they went on to confiscate buckets from women who were fetching water from boreholes to water vegetables and also took a bicycle from a man after arguing that it was not licensed.

"We saw them driving the animals into the truck. But we don't understand why they are barring us from watering our vegetables and taking innocent peoples' bicycles," said a woman who identified herself as MaNcube.

The crowd demanded the release of the man whose bicycle had been thrown into the truck shouting that the arrest was unjust.

"We don't know the owner of the donkeys. They usually loiter around this place but we suspect they are owned by men from the neighbourhoods who sell firewood," said Thembi, a vendor.

The crowd advanced towards the rangers, who sensed danger and rushed into their truck. They made an attempt to restore sanity by firing once in the air with a rifle. As the people were fleeing for their lives, the rangers removed handcuffs from the bicycle owner and sped off in their truck with the bicycle and donkeys.
