Warrant of arrest issued for Bulawayo deputy mayor

A warrant of arrest was on Thursday issued against Bulawayo's deputy
mayor, Gift Banda, after he failed to attend court to answer to charges
of failure to pay maintenance for his five-year-old daughter he sired
with an ex-lover.
Banda who is in maintainace arrears was supposed to appear before magistrate Tawanda Muchemwa at the Tredgold Courts.
Earlier in the morning, the deputy mayor, clad in jeans, was seen within the court building with his ex-girlfriend, Kholiwe Sitshoni of Southworld.
Sources indicated that the two had agreed to settle the matter out of court provided Banda managed to source the outstanding arrears before court proceedings commenced after the lunch break.
Banda was, however, in default when court proceedings began in the afternoon and Muchemwa issued a warrant of arrest.
It is the state's case that on January 27, Banda was ordered to pay a sum of $150 monthly for the upkeep of his minor child, with effect from January 31.
He allegedly defaulted and did not pay for school fees and medical bills.
Banda, who was elected as MDC-T's Bulawayo Province chairperson last weekend, reportedly fathered the child out of wedlock, in a love affair that was exposed in the media in 2009.
