Judgement in the case of a man who allegedly butchered his ex-wife's boyfriend with a spanner after being introduced to him was on Friday deferred to November 25.
Aurther Sibanda (37) of Pumula South pleaded not guilty to murder with actual intent when he appeared before Justice Nokuthula Moyo at the Bulawayo High Court.
He told the court that he was 'shocked' when his ex-wife Felistas Ngwenya introduced him to her new lover.
In her testimony, Ngwenya told the court that they were separated since April last year and she was staying with their children at some lodgings in Entumbane.
When he took the witness stand on Friday Aurther Sibanda, an ex-soldier, told the court that on April 3 he visited the mother of his children to deliver fresh farm produce that had been sent from his rural home.
He said when he was about to leave, he asked Ngwenya to introduce him to the now deceased, Elvis Dube, as they were meeting for the first time.
The ex-soldier, who is now in the plumbing business, said he was surprised to learn that the man was her boyfriend.
He alleged that Ngwenya and her boyfriend suddenly attacked him as he was about to leave.
"I was shocked when she told me the now deceased was her boyfriend. I stood up, intending to leave the house. When I was just by the door picking up my bag of spanners that I had brought from work, Felistas grabbed me from behind as the now deceased immediately started attacking me with clenched fists on my face," he explained.
Sibanda alleged that he was provoked by the lovebirds and had no intention to kill the now deceased, but acted in self-defence.
After submissions by the state and defence counsels, Justice Moyo deferred the matter to November 25 for judgement.
The state represented by Thompson Hove alleged that Sibanda had an altercation with the now deceased over his ex-wife.
The altercation degenerated into a fistfight with Sibanda pursuing Dube with a shifting spanner.
When he caught up with him, Sibanda allegedly assaulted Dube with the spanner several times all over the body, including the head.
Dube sustained serious injuries and died upon arrival at Mpilo Hospital that same day.
