A BULAWAYO man fell to his death after he was floored by a slap to his face by his angry brother during a dispute.

Bulawayo magistrate Sibongile Msipa heard this when Lovemore Makombe, 34, of Mahatshula suburb, appeared before her facing a charge of murdering his brother, Fungai Masheshera, 28.

Msipa remanded Makombe in custody to November 24 and advised him to apply to the High Court for bail.

Taurai Hondo, for the State, said on Friday last week, Makombe had an altercation with Fungai. It was, however, not mentioned in court why the two brothers fought.

The dispute degenerated into a fight resulting in Makombe slapping his brother with an open hand.

The court heard that Fungai fell headlong and smashed his head against a hard surface resulting in severe head injuries.

Upon realising that his brother was badly hurt, the court heard, Makombe took him to the United Bulawayo Hospitals where he was treated and discharged.

Overnight, however, Fungai's condition deteriorated and on the following day he was rushed back to the same hospital where he died minutes later.

In denying him bail, Hondo said there was no guarantee that Makombe would not abscond due to the gravity of the crime he committed.

The prosecutor also expressed fears that if granted bail, there was a likelihood that Makombe would either interfere with ongoing investigations or commit suicide.
