The City of Bulawayo has received a total of 150 nominations for the 120 Iconic Bulawayo Citizens who will be documented as part of the celebrations for the city's 120th anniversary.

Responding to questions sent by The Zimbabwe Mail on Thursday, Bulawayo City Council senior public relations officer, Nesisa Mpofu said the submission for the names ended last year in December.

"As part of the celebrations, the city called on the residents to assist in identifying iconic Bulawayo citizens. The aim of this campaign was to ensure that we know and recognise and celebrate the lives of the people who have played an influential role in the development of the city," she said.

However, Mpofu could not disclose the names at the moment as she said "the list has to be released all at once and is subject to finalisation by council".

Bulawayo, the country's second biggest city, celebrated 120 years on June 1 this year, having attained town status in 1894 when its advisory board was set up.

Mpofu said council intends to publish the names in its quarterly newsletter Masiye Phambili, according to Mpofu.

"There will be no celebrations held but the city will include them in a book which will be published with Masiye Phambili.

"The gender balance of the list will be dependent on the submissions that have been received. It is a bit difficult to try and balance the gender as these are submissions that showcase who the residents of Bulawayo view as Iconic," she said.
