The cash strapped Bulawayo City Council needs about $700 million to bring the city's dilapidated road network of about 2 000km to a good or better condition.

In a report contained in the latest city council minutes, the director of engineering Smelta Dube said this came out of a study conducted by consultants engaged by the local authority in 2012 to come up with a road rehabilitation and maintenance strategy for the entire city's road network.

The city roads are largely in a bad state, with most of them riddled in potholes and having taken a battering this rainy season.
