A beer binge turned nasty at Sakhelene Sports Bar in Nketa, Bulawayo when two women bashed a police officer following a misunderstanding.
Bongi Ndlovu, 25 and Sandisiwe Mabhena, 23, appeared before Western commonage magistrate Temba Chimiso facing an assault charge.
Chimiso convicted the duo and ordered each of them to perform 310 hours of community service.
Prosecuting Tony Kamudyariwa told the court that on January 29 this year at around 10PM, Ndlovu, Mabhena and the police officer Albert Muyambo, 26, were drinking beer at Sakhelene Sports Bar.
"Suddenly Muyambo and Mabhena had a misunderstanding resulting in Mabhena assaulting him with open hands on the face twice.
"Ndlovu intervened and picked an empty beer bottle which she used to strike Muyambo on the forehead," said Kamudyariwa.
He said Ndlovu went on to strike Muyambo with a broken beer bottle several times on his face and head.
The court heard that Muyambo sustained serious injuries on the head and face and was referred to Mpilo Central Hospital.
Magistrate Chimiso sentenced Ndlovu and Mabhena to 12 months in prison of which six months were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
The other six months were suspended on condition that the pair performs 310 hours of community service, Ndlovu at Amaveni Primary School and Mabhena at Mgiqika Primary School.
Last week, a Bulawayo man who assaulted a police officer who was trying to arrest him for public drinking and violence was ordered to perform 105 hours of community service at Mtshede Primary School in Njube by a Western Commonage magistrate.
Jonathan Phiri, 26, assaulted Cordian Maimba, 27, with clenched fists on the head, face and mouth causing him to lose his teeth filling.
