THREE Bulawayo men allegedly assaulted a taxi driver and robbed him of $65 at knife point before dumping him at Kelvin industrial area and driving off in his vehicle.

Thulani Ndlovu, 25, of Makokoba, Greatman Moyo, 31, and Xolani Gwebu, 24, both of Mzilikazi  on Tuesday appeared before Bulawayo provincial magistrate Sibongile Msipa-Marondedze facing a charge of robbery. The trio pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody to February 20.

Magistrate Msipa-Marondedze ordered them to apply for bail at the High Court.Prosecuting, Nkathazo Dlodlo said on January 30, at around 9PM, Sikhumbuzo Hove of Cowdray Park suburb was pirating with his taxi, a grey Toyota Raum.

"Hove was parked at Foundation College situated at Herbert Chitepo Avenue and Leopold Takawira Street when he was approached by the trio who hired him to take them to Barbourfields suburb for $5," said Dlodlo. He agreed and Gwebu who was walking with the aid of crutches occupied the front passenger's seat while Moyo and Ndlovu sat at the back said Dlodlo. The court heard that Hove was directed by the trio towards Barbourfields Stadium where they instructed him to drop them.

Moyo came out of the vehicle first, produced a knife and pointed it at Hove's neck ordering him to surrender all his cash plus cellphone, the court heard.Dlodlo said Gwebu then searched Hove and stole his cellphone and took away the $5 they had paid with from the ash tray.

"The trio manhandled Hove and dragged him to the back seat then Ndlovu tied his hands behind his back using his belt," said Dlodlo.

"Gwebu then occupied the driver's seat and drove the vehicle along Luveve road while Moyo, Ndlovu and Hove where at the back seat."

The trio assaulted Hove all over his body until he surrendered $60 and they dumped him at Revival Motor Ways Garage situated at Kelvin Industrial area, with his hands still tied up, the court heard.

Dlodlo said Hove was assisted by a security guard at the garage who untied his hands and he went to report the matter at Western Commonage Police Station, leading to Ndlovu, Moyo and Gwebu's arrest.

The vehicle was recovered parked at a shop at Nketa 9 and $65 was not recovered.
