A BULAWAYO man escaped death by whisker after being stabbed with a kitchen knife by his wife over suspected infidelity.

Sinikiwe Moyo (28) appeared before the Western Commonage provincial magistrate Willard Mafios Moyo facing physical abuse charges.

She allegedly struck her husband Clever Jegede with an empty beer bottle on the head several times before strangling him.

She pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded in custody to February 18 for trial continuation.

In her defence, Moyo said she was defending herself from her aggressive husband.

"I did not only stab him out of the blue (but) rather it was in self-defence," she said.

"Jegede was aggressive and wanted to assault me, so I was left with no choice but to fight back."

She reportedly pinned her husband down and strangled him while blood oozed from the head wound caused by bottle strike.

Prosecutor Mufaro Mageza told the court that Sinikiwe arrived home at around 12 midnight on February 3 and banged the door demanding that Jegede open for her.

However, Jegede ignored the banging as a way of disciplining her for coming home late at night.

Sinikiwe was infuriated and suspected that he was in the company of a girlfriend and continued banging louder.

Annoyed, Jegede opened the door while shouting at his wife and he was struck with an empty beer bottle on the head.

"I took away the bottle after she struck me and followed her into the house (and) that is when she took a knife from the kitchen and stabbed me once in the chest," Jegede said.

"I fell down and she strangled me, and that's when I cried out for help."

Neighbours came to Jegede's rescue and took the bleeding man to hospital, before reporting the matter to the police.

Sinikiwe packed her bags and left the house that very night and was only arrested the next morning.
