A 23-YEAR-OLD suspected lady of the night from Nkulumane suburb, Bulawayo, was slapped with a three-month jail term after being convicted of stealing $300 from a client.

Siduduzile Madevu appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Tancy Chipumha Dube where she was charged under Section 113 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.

She pleaded not guilty to the allegations claiming she had never met the complainant Godfrey Gono, but the magistrate sentenced her to nine months before suspending three months on condition that she paid back Gono before February 28.

Another three months were suspended on condition that she is not found guilty of a similar crime within five years, leaving her to serve the remaining three months in prison without the option of a fine.

Madevu said on the day in question, she did not go to a night club, but spent the night at a cousin's place in Entumbane.

"If this man says he slept with me, can he be able to identify any scar on my body?" she asked.

Gono failed to give a tangible response to the question and claimed he was too drunk to notice any scars that night.

"I was drunk and had no time to study your body," he said.

Prosecutor Kenneth Shava told the court that on January 23 this year, Gono met Madevu and they decided to drink together at Nkulumane Complex night club.

After a few drinks at around midnight, Gono took Madevu to his house where they spent the night.

"To my surprise when I woke up early in the morning Madevu was nowhere to be found and her phone was not reachable. I went straight to my wardrobe where I had hung my jacket with $300 in the pocket, but I found it empty," Gono said.

Gono said he kept on calling Madevu, but she never responded to his calls, leaving him with no option but to report the matter to the police.
