A 'polygamist' who impregnated a 21-year-old NUST student has been ordered to pay $450 for the upkeep of his child including spousal support for the woman as long as she lives or stays unmarried.
The man, Tinashe Chanakira, who is believed to be married to another woman, reportedly paid lobola for the NUST student in September last year.
Chanakira told the court that he was forced to pay lobola instead of damage by the woman's family.
However, a Bulawayo magistrate on Wednesday ruled that since Chanakira had already paid towards Musarurwa's lobola, he was deemed customarily married to her.
Chanakira was ordered to pay $250 a month to the woman as spousal maintenance until her death, divorce or when she remarries.
For the upkeep of their month old baby, Chanakira was order to pay $200 for 18 years.
