A SUSPECTED love triangle ended in tragedy when a teenager from Bulawayo's Pumula South suburb was stabbed to death allegedly by a group of boys in a fight over a girl whilst his friends watched helplessly.
Witnesses and the victim's family said the incident occurred Thursday evening, around 6 p.m in Pumula South suburb and the deceased has been identified as Mkhulisi Ncube, aged 18.
A Pumula South resident, Thembelani Ngwenya, who witnessed the tragic incident said Mkhulisi was sharply stabbed once on the neck and died shortly afterwards due to excessive bleeding.
"He passed through my stall asking for R5 and I gave him R2 and told him to come after some minutes for another R3. He was following his friends who had just passed by heading towards Premier High School way," he said.
Ngwenya said the deceased and his friends were accosted and confronted by a group of boys from the same suburb, who were also walking towards the same school.
"This is when the argument started between Mkhulisi's friends and the boys…," he said.
According to Ngwenya, Mkhulisi tried to intervene in the scuffle, urging the boys to cool down, not knowing that Prosper (full name Prosper Dungeni, 22 the suspected perpetrator) was armed with a knife.
"The fight was caused when one of the gang members who had a grudge with Mkhulisi's friends accused him of snatching his girl who learns at Premier High School. I saw one of the boys, Prosper pulling out a knife and stabbed Mkhulisi on the side of his neck. When Mkhululi fell down, some of the gang members fled including Prosper leaving him lying in blood ," he said.
One of the neighbours, claimed that Prosper's father was a security guard at Premier High School while the accused was a former student at Foundation College.
When Radio Dialogue went to the scene of the crime Friday, blood stains and splatters were still on the road.
The news crew proceeded to the victim's family and found mourners already gathered at the victim's homestead.
Mkhulisi's uncle, Newman Hlatshwayo, visibly in pain, narrated the family had no idea how his nephew was murdered but were relying on information they had gathered from neighbours who had witnessed the incident.
"My nephew died a painful death. I'm still shocked, the whole family is, especially looking at the circumstances surrounding his death. The police arrived at the scene after two hours and arrested some of the perpetrators who were still at the scene. Prosper was arrested at Nkulumane suburb later were he had sought refuge at his uncle's place," he said.
Bulawayo Provincial Police Spokesperson, Mandlenkosi Moyo, confirmed the incident but said he was waiting for the official docket which had more detail.
Last year in November, a similar incident occurred in Makokoba suburb, when a 17 year old boy was stabbed to death allegedly by a group of 16 boys in a fight over a girl.
