A BULAWAYO man has been hauled to court for allegedly beating up his 16-year old girlfriend and stealing her cellphone.

Kelvin Msimanga, 27, of Matsheumhlophe suburb, allegedly pounced on his girlfriend - a Form Three pupil at a city high school -when she was on her way home from church two weeks ago.

He asked the pupil to kiss him and when she refused, he slapped her in the face twice, the court heard.

The following day, Msimanga allegedly waylaid the girl when she was on her way home from school.

He dragged her to a bushy area, held a knife to her chest and slapped her until she was rescued by a passerby.

Msimanga appeared on Friday before Bulawayo magistrate Tawanda Muchemwa facing two counts of theft and assault.

He was not asked to plead and remanded out of custody to March 19.

Prosecuting, Munyonga Kuvarega said on February 22, at around 4PM, the pupil met Msimanga.

"Msimanga was carrying a bottle of beer and he asked the pupil to kiss him, but she refused saying that he was stinking of beer," said Kuvarega.

He said Msimanga slapped her twice in the face.

The girl was recording everything that was taking place on her cellphone.

The court heard that Msimanga took away her Nokia X2 without her consent.

The following day the pupil disembarked from a commuter omnibus at Edenfield Road, Matsheumhlophe suburb and Msimanga spotted her, said Kuvarega.

He was riding on a bicycle at the time and started following her.

Msimanga stopped at a bushy area and called her, but she refused.

The court heard that he grabbed the pupil and dragged her to the bushy area at knife point before punching her face several times.

She sustained a swollen lip and bruises on her neck.

The matter was reported to the police leading to Msimanga's arrest.
