Three plain clothes police officer recently begged an enraged kombi driver for mercy when he descended on them with his fists in Bulawayo.
Emmanuel Ncube (24) of Khami Prison allegedly ran riot when the police officers tried to arrest him for dropping passengers at an illegal point along 6th Avenue on Friday 6 March.
For the drama that left scores of commuters and touts cheering, Ncube appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Gladmore Mushove facing two counts of assault and resisting a peace officer.
He pleaded not guilty and was remanded out of custody to March 19.
The prosecutor, Kudakwashe Jaravaza said on March 6, at around 9am, Constables Simbarashe Chifamba, Maweni and Mathobela were assigned to target illegal pickups along 6th Avenue when the saw Ncube dropping passengers.
Chifamba allegedly boarded the kombi and told Ncube he was under arrest before ordering to drive to the Bulawayo Central Police Station.
Ncube reportedly drove off at top speed, injuring a passenger who was getting of the kombi, in the process.
Jaravaza said Chifamba started threatening Ncube and Ncube got angry and stopped the car.
"He started slapping Chifamba until Mathobela ran to his aid. Ncube began punching the two police officers while they colleague watched helplessly," said Jaravaza.
A group of cheering touts said the cops begged for mercy as Ncube went into overdrive.
When the three police officers realised no mercy was forthcoming, they ganged up and managed to handcuff Ncube.
