A MAN from Vulindlela Flats at Makokoba has been slapped with an effective four year jail term for ripping another man's stomach open with a knife in a brawl over 1 rand change after he bought a cigarette using 1 rand and demanded change from his victim's wife who protested giving him.
Sethu Gumede (33) was denying the charge of attempted murder when he appeared before Bulawayo Regional Court magistrate Mark Dzira.
The attempted murder incident occurred at Gijima Nite Club on August 9, 2014 at 2am. Gumede stabbed Stephen Tizirayi (33) of Entumbane who intervened when (Gumede) was quarreling with his wife Brenda Furayi who was vending in front of the Nite Club.
Gumede in denying the charge told the court he went to the nite club running as they were people who were pursuing him and when he sought refuge in the nite club those who were running after him might have been the ones who stabbed Tizirayi.
"I am not the one who stabbed him, I was being pursued by some people and went into the Nite club running, those who were running after me are the ones who stabbed him," he said.
But Dzira had none of it as he said it was clear that he was the one who stabbed Tizirayi.
He then sentenced him to six years in jail. Two years of the sentence were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
The prosecutor Tinashe Dzipe told the court that on August 9, 2014, at 2am Tizirayi was at Gijima Nite Club with his wife Furayi who was vending at the nite Club's entrance.
Gumede approached her and paid R1 for a cigarette. After getting the cigarrete Gumede demanded a R1 change claiming that he gave Furayi R2 while buying the cigarette.
But Furayi insisted that he had given her R1 and there was no change. The quarrel between Furayi and Gumede attracted Tizirayi's attention from inside the Nite Club. Tizirayi visited the scene and enquired what the noise was all about. It is then that Gumede pounced on him with a knife on the abdomen. He ripped his stomach open and the intestines were left protruding. Members of the public immediately arrested Gumede and handed him to the police.
