BULAWAYO - In an unbelievable case of cruelty, the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) securities yesterday locked up 8 students at the main library in town for close to an hour after they have refused to leave library, following the heavy rains that pounded the city in the evening.
According to a source close to the matter, the students were released from the dark basement by the securities after the police intervened. The source alleged that the students were locked up in the library with poor ventilation facilities.
"There were about 8 students and the majority were part four's from the Journalism and Media Studies department. They said they were shocked after packing their things and prepared to leave the basement at 4:55 p.m., only to find the doors locked," said a student who witnessed the event but denied to be named.
He added that some of the students even contemplatedsleeping in the library as the securities turned a deaf ear to their calls.
The incident comes three days after lectures and non-teaching staff at the institution went on a strike, after the government failed to pay them their February salaries.
However another concerned student from the same institution who requested anonymity said what the securities did was a total abuse of power and was not called for.
"What the securities did is an acceptable. It is actually a taboo in our culture. They should find better ways of dealing with students rather thantreating them in an inhuman manner like what they did. If they are angry about their late salaries, they should approach the institution and not to torment students for crimes they have not committed," said the student.
